Back in 2001 when online video was yet in its infancy, you may recall a series of films commissioned by BMW to showcase their then-new lineup of cars. The Hire, or so the series of films were dubbed, was such a hit that the films garnered over 10 million views – a huge success considering people were still getting to grips with that new Youtube website thing.
Fast forward fifteen years later, BMW have now decided that it’s time to bring back their signature plot-driven shorts to life. That said, they’ve recently unveiled The Escape, a 10-minute film centered around the new 2017 BMW 5-Series (or the G30 in BMW-speak). As with their previous films, BMW have ensured that their new 5-er only works with the best in the entertainment industry. Fans of the previous films will recognize the return of an aged Clive Owen behind the wheel, while all the action around the car is directed by Neill Blomkamp, the man behind District 9. Further adding to the star-studded cast would be Jon Bernthal from The Walking Dead and Daredevil, Dakota Fanning, and Vera Farmiga.
Unlike the previous films which revolved around transiting valuable cargo or VIP celebrities however, The Escape has a hint of sci-fi in the mix. Nonetheless, the plot hardly takes anything away from the action and stunts – which means we get to see the new 5-series dance like its predecessor did in the older films.
